Sulayman Human (24) started piano at the age of 12. He became the first person to win the Lionel Bowman Beethoven Competition in Stellenbosch whilst still a high school pupil. In 2012 Human was the first prize winner of Hennie Joubert National Piano Competition, Artscape National Piano Competition as well as Atterbury National Piano Competition. In 2013 he was the first prize winner of the SACS Music Competition and winner of the piano category of ATKV-Muziq national classical music competition. Human was also the winner of both the Mabel Quick Undergraduate Scholarship and Mabel Quick Overseas Scholarship, hosted by Stellenbosch Conservatory in 2014. In 2015 he received the Graham Beck Scholarship from Stellenbosch Conservatory, which enabled him to receive master classes from Jura Margulis in Salzburg. In 2016 Human received third prize at ATKV-Muziq and second prize at the Olive Lieberz Piano Competition. In 2017 Human was awarded first prize at the Fine Music Radio Music Bursary Competition and most recently the first prize at ATKV- Muziq.
He has received masterclasses from international pianists such as André Watts, Anton Nel, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, Jura Margulis, Ilya Friedberg, Aviram Reichert, Leslie Howard and Marina Lomazov.
Human is also an active chamber musician, performing frequently with fellow students and professionals. He has played with CPO, USSO and KZNPO at their respective concerto festivals. In 2013 he was invited to play Khachaturian Piano Concerto with CPO as part of the final of the Len van Zyl Conducting Competition. In 2015 he performed Chopin’s F Minor Piano Concerto with Gérard Korsten conducting Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra in Brooklyn Theatre. This performance was described by Paul Boekkooi as a performance wherein the first and third movement had “extraordinary symbiosis between soloistic detail with its melodic-architectural wealth, as well as an ongoing lyrical line in combination with a thorough level of technical perfection and touch” and “equilibrium between refined sound quality and emotional depth is reached in an exceptional framework of expressivity” in the Larghetto. In 2017 Human was invited back to GPO to perform Chopin’s E Minor Piano Concerto under the baton of Gerben Grooten.
