CHARL dU PLessis TRIO
The Charl du Plessis Trio, formed in 2006, is a South African jazz ensemble consisting of pianist Charl du Plessis, bassist Werner Spies, and drummer Peter Auret. Known for their unique fusion of classical and jazz elements, the trio has gained international recognition for their captivating and innovative sound. Their chemistry and deep understanding of each other’s musical styles create a fresh and dynamic musical experience. The trio has toured extensively across Eastern Asia, Europe, and Southern Africa, and has recorded nine albums and two DVDs under their international contract with Swiss label Claves. Their work has earned multiple awards, including four South African Music Awards (SAMAs), a Ghoema, and a Fiësta.
Charl du Plessis, a Steinway Artist and Claves recording artist, holds a doctorate in piano performance and has performed at prestigious venues like Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, London’s Royal Albert Hall, and Shanghai’s Cultural Arts Centre. Werner Spies is a versatile bass player and educator, and Peter Auret is one of South Africa’s top jazz drummers and a highly regarded recording engineer with three SAMAs to his name. Together, the trio continues to push the boundaries of crossover jazz, captivating audiences worldwide.
