Sean Sanby
Sean Sanby is a highly acclaimed bassist, composer, and producer based in Cape Town, South Africa, known for his distinctive blend of passion, storytelling, and technical expertise. After earning his Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance (cum laude) from UCT, Sean's musical journey has seen him earn numerous accolades, including first place in the UNISA National Strings Competition and winning the FMR Music Bursary Competition in the Jazz category. He has been a member of prestigious youth bands like The Standard Bank National Youth & School's Bands and represented UCT at the Arcevia Jazz Festival in Italy.
Sean’s debut album, Out of the Candlelight (2020), received widespread critical acclaim, cementing his reputation as both a composer and producer. He has since performed around South Africa with his project and toured internationally as a bassist for productions such as School of Rock and Matilda the Musical.
In addition to performing, Sean is a sought-after recording and session musician, contributing his bass skills to numerous projects across various genres. He has worked with prominent artists including Mandisi Dyantyis, Darren English, Hilton Schilder, and Jitsvinger, among others. Sean is also dedicated to education and has served as a part-time lecturer at UCT, teaching double and electric bass, as well as ensemble music. His versatility and contributions to both the local and international music scenes continue to make him a key figure in South Africa's music landscape.
