Prof Coert Geldenhuys
Coert Geldenhuys is a freelance forest ecologist working through FORESTWOOD cc from Pretoria, an Extraordinary Professor in Forest Science at Stellenbosch University and in Plant Sciences at University of Pretoria.
He holds a BSc Forestry degree in Plantation Forestry and an MSc Forestry degree (Ecology of Outeniqua Yellowwood) from Stellenbosch University, and a PhD Botany degree from University of Cape Town (Biogeography, composition and ecology of Southern Cape forests). He has more than 45 years of work experience in the ecology and management of natural forests and woodlands in South Africa and most countries of sub-Saharan Africa.
He has wide experience dealing with resource use (timber, non-timber and non-wood products), rehabilitation and ecotourism in natural evergreen forests and deciduous woodlands in South Africa, most sub-Saharan African countries, and in other parts of the world. He uses every good opportunity that comes his way to enjoy new experiences and to deal with new challenges in resource use, management of invasive alien plants and conservation, often challenging fixed mindsets, contemporary policies and outdated practices. He likes to work himself out of a job by training others to continue with what he started, from the workplace to post-graduate level.
Coert is a regular visitor to his research sites in the Grootvadersbosch Valley and his knowledge of indigenous forests will transform any forest stroll into a magical experience.
