Professor Mike Bruton
Prof Bruton’s Main research fields include ichthyology and aquatic ecology. Internationally known for his research and conservation efforts on the coelacanth. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 31 scientific and popular books on ichthyology, history of science, South African and African inventions and science education. Published over 800 popular science and technology articles. Numerous radio and TV interviews and participated in the making of nine science education TV documentaries.
He is directly involved in the establishment of museums, aquaria and science centres in southern Africa and in the Middle East (Bahrain and Saudi Arabia). He has developed travelling exhibitions on a wide variety of science and technology topics and is actively involved in the planning and organization of science centre conferences locally and internationally.
His awards include: Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa (1984); Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académique from the Government of France (2001); Lifetime Achievement Award, National Science & Technology Forum (2001); Emeritus Professor, University of Cape Town (2004); Honorary Life Member, Two Oceans Aquarium (2013); Honorary Life Member, South African Association for Science & Technology Centres (SAASTEC, 2015); Marloth Medal of the Royal Society of South Africa for outstanding contributions to science and science education over a lifetime (November 2020).
