Shaun Johannes
Shaun’s musical career started in late 1996 when he started teaching myself how to play piano and to read music. His development on the bass guitar started in 1999. As part of his musical development, he has had the privilege of being a founder member of a township music group called the Little Giants. The band was established to showcase the talented young musicians that are abundant in the Cape Flats. The Little Giants went on to perform at numerous gigs throughout Cape Town.
Shaun graduated from the University of Cape Town in 2010 with a M. Mus Degree in ‘Performance & Dissertation. He had been a gigging musician for nearly two decades and have played in every possible scenario, with the exception of an actual circus, imaginable. He has played in MANY bands (Big Band, Orchestra, Trio, Duo, etc) in varying genres (Funk, Reggae, Jazz, Afro-Cuban, World) in varying applications (Concerts, Workshops, Tours, Theatre Runs, etc) and have gained a wealth of knowledge around the composition of music, it’s musical setting, applications and, mostly, how to work with other people to get the best possible results!
He has worked in the capacity of Musical Director for theatre shows, corporate events and with many different artists, including Freshly Ground, Hugh Masekela, Elvis Blue, Jonny Clegg, Gloria Bosman to name a few. He is currently employed as the ‘Electric Bass Guitar’ lecturer for the Jazz Studies programme at the University of Cape Town and am the owner/Recording Engineer at ‘Mahogany Recording Studios’. Shaun cherishes the ability of doing a great deal of the conceptualization, production and arrangement for projects and artists alike.
Shaun is proficient on both electric bass and upright bass, and this bring a unique sound and variety to his many live performances.
