Zolani Youth Choir

Richard Cock Conducts Silver Mountain Music Festival Band
The Zolani Youth Choir, based in the small town of Ashton in the Western Cape, was founded in 2012 in response to the lack of cultural activities in local schools and the community. Its mission is to provide young people with basic music skills, fostering a passion for the arts. The choir is made up of 45 scholars, aged 12 to 25, from various schools who have no formal music training but possess a deep love for singing.
The choir’s primary goal is to show the community, especially the youth, that with dedication and hard work, anything is possible. Through singing, members learn discipline, teamwork, and responsibility, as they are held to high standards and are expected to adhere to group rules. Those who fail to meet these expectations may face consequences, including expulsion, which teaches them the importance of commitment and accountability.
Looking to the future, the choir aims to be recognised as one of South Africa's top choirs, eventually representing Ashton and the country on international stages. The Zolani Youth Choir serves as an educational and personal development tool, helping young people discover their potential, instilling pride in their abilities, and giving them a broader perspective on life.
